Accountant

Reports To: Director for Finance and Administration

Position Summary: The Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate control procedures are implemented and monitored.  This position includes a wide variety of record and financial management duties including: system/database grant establishment; maintenance of files and supporting documentation; initiating payments for accepted donor grant recommendations, scholarship and loan awards; general payables; wire transfers; supporting the investment management function; preparation and review of quarterly donor reports and accounting reports; and working with external auditor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile and analyze financial information to prepare financial statements including monthly and annual accounts
  • Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures
  • Prepare financial management reports and ensure financial reporting deadlines are met
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities
  • Perform accurate end of period close
  • Continuous support of budget and forecast activities
  • Maintain general ledger in financial database (MicroEdge FIMS)
  • Support  annual audit process
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate recording  of revenues and expenses
  • Reconcile, reviews, verify and post investment related activity for investment portfolios and cash accounts
  • Maintenance and reconciliation of all general ledger accounts and general journal entries
  • Calculate all administrative fees and available to spend on endowments
  • Prepare and review periodic individual fund financial reports;
  • Receive and review donor grant recommendation forms; approve scholarship and loan awards. Prepare checks, establish and maintain accounts in system. Trouble shoot grant problems, accounting issues requiring donor, and/or other internal and external contact, explanation and resolution.
  • Receive loan payment checks from outside collection agency; process in system.
  • Manage general AP/AR; make wire transfers, monitor timing of transfer; reconciliation of cash on hand statements; preparation of bank deposits; etc.
  • Maintain a variety of system and/or manual records, files, documents. Prepare periodic and special reports as requested.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned or requested by supervisor for the Investment Committee and Audit & Finance Committee.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

The successful candidate should possess the following professional qualifications and skills:

A bachelor’s degree and at least five years of professional experience in financial accounting is required preferably in a nonprofit organization. This position requires effective communications, strong service-oriented skills, and attention to detail and accuracy. Must be well-organized and have project management skills.

Have a solid knowledge of accounting practices and principles, investments, and experience with related computer applications.  Be proficient with MS Office and experience with a relational database and ability to learn new software quickly.

Must demonstrate good judgment and problem-solvingskills; must exhibit high degree of initiative and responsibility, be self-motivated, and flexible in adjusting to changing circumstances.
