Nonprofits and the Economic Downturn

The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts recognizes that difficult economic times are creating challenges for many of the Pioneer Valley’s residents and the nonprofits that serve them. The Foundation itself is not immune to these challenges. Our funds have experienced market losses reducing our capacity to offset significant cuts experienced by individual organizations. Despite these challenges we want to assure you that we remain an important resource to aid nonprofits in addressing critical needs, in continuing essential programs and services, and in developing creative and innovative solutions to pressing problems.

We recently surveyed 46 nonprofit organizations that applied to our Competitive Grants Program in January 2009 to help us better understand how nonprofits are impacted by the recent economic downturn and the decisions they are making as a result. (Read the results of the survey) While the survey gave us an initial glimpse of the issues, we are continuing to gather information to keep current with the changes and impacts that surface.

Please feel free to review our grant guidelines, call the Foundation to consult with a member of the grants staff, or attend one of our upcoming grant orientation sessions to obtain information or clarify your eligibility for funding.
